I'm the kind of guy who values "visual quality of output"
substantially higher than "ease of use for newbies", and
I'm very happy with Xcircuit.  It has its share of warts,
but nothing I can't fix with vi and perl.  It also has
the advantage of being native, supported Debian software.
I started using Xcircuit and pcb before gEDA existed.

So yes, I concur: look at other software as well.
Choice is good!
