I believe that the gtk-2.4.x tarballs on that webpage are just there
for folks who need to install a version of GTK to build the various
packages.   They aren't meant as prerequisite versions ... I think.

However, I do recall that PCB *does* require a newer version of GTK
than 2.2 ... maybe it requires 2.4?  That means that folks who install
from the .iso *do* need 2.4.

In any event, like Ales has said, perhaps now is the time to force a
GTK upgrade?  But before doing that, perhaps a quick discussion is in
order?  (We're having that discussion right now!)
