Many symbols shipped with gEDA/gschem use simple text to display the name of the device, i.e. "MAX232" or "7404".
Tragesym does this too -- so I did this for my own symbols. But is this really a good choice? I think there are at least three disadvantages: 1. If I use a logic symbol like "7404" I may need a special variant like "74HTC04" (other may not work) so I will modify the name. 2. I flip (mirror) a symbol in the schematic. In most rectangular symbols refdes is on the right top corner by default and name on the left top corner. If I flip the symbol, this is exchanged, and I can not move name back to the left. 3. I had some rare cases where the device name like "7404" was displayed at a location which was not well suited for my schematic, but is is not possible to move it. So why not use attributes for visible name, i.e. device= ?
