The X/Y syringe thing is kind of like a printer -- it's a 1x1 dot matrix printer for solder paste :) It might be a project that could be easily hacked. Take one of the manual foot-switch operated solder syringes that runs on shop air, and lash it up to a cheap table-top CNC router.
