But I am not very happy with the new desktop. I use Gnome also. The Unity desktop seemed interesting at first, but it has some serious progressive slowdown bugs that completely kill it. I switched to the Ubuntu Classic session. > > I am thinking about changing to xcfe. > > > > What desktop are you using for gEDA? > > > > (are the any advantages or disadvantages for KDE, Gnome or XCFE > > in relation to gEDA?) No, really it is a matter of personal preference about appearance, configurability, and especially what “core desktop applications” you prefer. When I say core desktop applications, I mean that KDE, Gnome, XFCE, etc. have many applications such as file manager, CD/DVD burner, web browser, e-mail client, terminal applications, archive manager, etc. that they provide or integrate most seamlessly with. However, you can certainly mix an match. For instance, I use Firefox instead of Konqueror (KDE) or Epiphany (Gnome), and Claws instead of Kmail or Evolution. But k3b is the most powerful CD/DVD burner, so I use that even on Gnome. I use GIMP even on KDE. You can certainly switch desktop managers/window managers often: just log out, choose a different session, and log back in. It's not a big deal.
