Because it's not automatically generated. You can place a 7400 without defining (or forget defining) slot and numslots attributes, and I can't assume a 7400 has only 1 slot just because the user forgot to define the attributes properly. I think they are necessary attributes. If they don't apply, but they exist and are coherent, will they annoy the user? Maybe it's not necessary to show the numslots attribute to the user, because it's defined in the symbol, and the user shouldn't be able to change that. But I still think slot=1 attribute should be defined when placing a part, which is coherent for both multislotted and non-multislotted parts. This definition will be made by default when placing a part, and the user will never have to change that unless he knows it's multislotted and wants to change the slot. There's no change in gschem's behaviour for the user, but it has the great advantage than he can use the DRC checker, for example, just without doing anything else. Think about this: you have a design using non-multislotted parts, and due to a design problem, you have to introduce a multislotted part. If you want to pass the DRC checker (as you should do), you will have to assign slot and numslots attributes to all parts of your design. Will it be right for a great EDA tool ? I don't think so. If those attributes are defined by default, you don't need to do anything to use the DRC checker. And the user is not annoyed with such things. But it's just my opinion, each person has its own.
