Pan view is a great technology, but it is not well integrated. I am not aware 
of any documentation. I can give you some details on the pixbuf renderer, 
which is used as a background for both pan view and the normal image window, 
but I am afraid that nobody has looked into the higher level code since the 
fork, so the only documentation is the source code itself.

Before any work on the Pan view there should be a plan how to integrate it 
with the rest of program. My personal opinion is that it can be used only for
special tasks, like picking one image and going back to normal mode.

The calendar mode should be IMO added to the main window, as an alternative to 
the folder view, as I wrote in my previous mail. And I think that the first 
step for any feature that would work with multiple images in non-trivial way, 
either in Pan view or in normal mode, is the database cache (based on 
sqlite).
