*Did Stalin have a very good command of the Russian language? I know that
he had a strong Georgian accent but did his secretaries have to correct his
grammar etc. much in written documents? Did he make many mistakes in his
speech?

*Stalin himself was an editor of the Pravda newspaper before the Revolution
when he wasn’t powerful enough to have numerous secretaries.* So yes, he
definitely had a very good, professional-level written Russian. Remember,
he was educated in a seminary in Russian, despite the fact that he studied
in Georgia. So, he had plenty of practice since the moment when his mother
decided that he should become a priest and asked a family friend, a priest
himself, to teach young Joseph the Russian language. Much later in life,
Stalin personally edited the Soviet anthem - a poetic text in Russian.

*On the other hand, Stalin never managed to properly pronounce Russian soft
consonants. *I’ve just listened to one of his last recordings, and he still
was mispronouncing words. But one has to be Russian (or a native speaker of
another language with hard/soft consonants) to notice that. I suspect that
he failed to grasp that nuance early in life because people who taught him
Russian were themselves Georgians. And it is hard to learn something so
subtle as an adult.
