#Calexit: Some Californians Plot Secession from Trump-Led U.S. The most
populous state voted overwhelmingly for Hillary Clinton.

Organizers for Calexit, that idea that California should secede from the
United States, have seen an uptick in interest
http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/10/politics/calexit-donald-trump/index.html in their
cause following the election of Donald Trump.

In Tuesday's vote, 61 percent of the state voted for Democratic presidential
nominee Hillary Clinton, while 33 percent backed the president-elect.

"As the sixth largest economy in the world, California is more economically
powerful than France and has a population larger than Poland," notes the
website of "Yes California," a group pushing the issue. "Point-by-point,
California compares and competes with countries, not just the 49 other states."

The group argues Californian values and the values of the rest of the country
are increasingly out of step.

"In our view, the United States of America represents so many things that
conflict with Californian values, and our continued statehood means California
will continue subsidizing the other states to our own detriment," the group
says http://www.yescalifornia.org/. "In 2016, the United Kingdom voted to leave
the international community with their 'Brexit' vote. Our 'Calexit' referendum
is about California joining the international community."

 The group is seeking
http://www.businessinsider.com/calexit-explainer-california-plans-to-secede-2016-11
for a referendum in 2019 to be held that, if passed, would make California a
separate country.
Such a development would likely be sour news to three of the state's rising
political stars-- Senator-elect Kamala Harris
http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2016/11/democrats-defeat-trump-president-2020,
 Lieutenant Gov. Gavin Newsom

and Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti
http://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2016/08/cities-urban-policy-mayors-survey-revitalization-us-214151,
all floated as possible presidential candidates, perhaps in 2020 against Trump.

"Probably no state is going to be more shocked by [Trump's victory] than
California," Bruce E. Cain, a political science professor at Stanford
University, told The New York Times
http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/09/us/california-today-trump-president-kamala-harris-election.html?_r=0
 late Tuesday.

But others caution observers, and even leaders in the state, against seeing
the state as a monolith.

"We're not," said Mindy Romero, the director of the California Civic
Engagement Project at the University of California - Davis. "And people do feel
left out or marginalized... There will be areas of the state that are very glad
to see Donald Trump win and I think we should recognize that."
