mengorganisasi pertemuan internasional anti WTO. Sudah cukup diwakili oleh Tkk
yang begitu besar, gagah, lihai diplomasinya dan kaya , bukan?
BALI, Indonesia – As part of the People’s Global Camp (PGC) activities on
December 4, the Asian Peasant Coalition (APC), the International League of
People’s Struggle (ILPS) Commission 6 and the International Fisherfolk and
Fishworkers Coalition (IFWC) in cooperation with the Peoples Coalition on Food
Sovereignty (PCFS) successfully organized the “International Workshop on WTO,
Global Landgrabbing and Resistance.”At least 70 participants from 29
organizations coming from the Philippines, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia,
Bangladesh, Pakistan, Indonesia and Switzerland joined the workshop from 1:00
pm to 5:00 pm at the Peasant Camp (Tenda 2), GOR Ngurah Rai Sports Center in
Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia. In line with the PGC objective, the self-organized
event served as a protest against the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) 9th
Ministerial Conference (MC9).Fathima Burnad, APC Chairperson, welcomed the
participants. She stated that since the establishment of the APC in 2003, the
APC consistently resisted the WTO and neo-liberal globalization on agriculture
and trade especially in Hongkong (2005) and now in Bali. Burnad calls on
everyone in further strengthening the people’s movement against the WTO. Burnad
is also from the Tamil Nadu Women’s Forum in India.Antonio Tujan of IBON
International (Philippines) stressed that WTO promoted land speculation and
global landgrab. He cited the following reasons for global landgrab: expansion
of agribusiness corporations, agro fuels, landgrab for development projects and
financialization or land speculation.Azra Sayeed of Roots for Equity (Pakistan)
discussed the increasing role of Pakistani military and the US military in
connection to landgrabbing in Pakistan. She cited that the Pakistani government
promised foreign landgrabbers to mobilize its one (1) million military forces
to protect their business interests. She added that the weapons utilized in
suppressing global landgrabbing came from the US military corporations. Sayeed
stated that the US maintains two American bases to keep an eye on India, China
and for its search for oil and energy. Finally, she stressed that global
landgrab cannot be separated from US militarism.Rafael “Ka Paeng” Mariano of
KMP (Peasant Movement of the Philippines) expounded on the role of the state in
pursuing WTO agenda, neo-liberal globalization and global landgrab. He
mentioned that the national laws, programs and policies are attuned to fit the
dictates and impositions of the US-led WTO. He emphasized that land reform
programs are designed to accommodate free market state and wages campaign of
repression against peasants and the people resisting WTO and imperialist
globalization. He called on the people to strengthen the struggle for land,
freedom and justice and to make stronger the solidarity at the international
level.Representatives of peasant movements in India (P. Chennaiah of the Andhra
Pradesh Vyavasaya Vruthidarula Union–APVVU), Pakistan (Mujeeb Ur Rahaman of the
Pakistan Kissan Mazdoor Tahreek-PKMT), Indonesia (Budi of the Alliance for
Agrarian Reform Movement- AGRA), Bangladesh (Badrul Alam of the Bangladesh
Krishok Federation),Sri Lanka (Lakpriya Nanarakkaya of the Movement for Land
and Agricultural Reform), and Malaysia (Nicholas Mujah of the Sarawak Dayak
Iban Association-SADIA), shared their current struggles against landgrabbing
and resource plunder. Finally, the participants agreed to organize continuing
study sessions, workshops and conferences to further understand the impacts of
WTO and neo-liberal globalization on agriculture and trade. They concurred to
discuss and unite on people’s alternatives to corporatization and
financialization of agriculture. They also agreed to intensify resistance, to
strengthen peasants’ organizations and to mobilize people against imperialist
globalization, and for system change. The workshop ended with a stronger unity
to Junk WTO and to build a bright future for humanity. The participants shouted
“Junk, Junk WTO!” “Bubarkan WTO!” “Down with Imperialism!” “Long live
international solidarity!”.#
