Okay, this is getting funny. So far, I know of these people who have responded to that Microsoft speech: Eric S. Raymond, Richard M. Stallman, Linus Torvalds, Alan Cox, Rhett Glauser of Lineo, The Software & Information Industry Association, and now Tim O'Reilly. I wonder how long before MS makes a few 'clarifications' of Mundie's comments. Anyone following this, and running out of things to read, should read http://www.perens.com/Articles/Patents.html . It's unrelated to the actual Microsoft issue, but Bruce makes some pretty good points about Software Patents that have some relevance to the topic. -Tim
On 07 May 2001 08:06:15 -0500, Dustin Puryear wrote: > Denise Olliffe wrote: > > > > May 4, 2001 > > > > Tim O'Reilly Responds to Microsoft "Shared Source" Initiative > > > > Yesterday, in a speech defending Microsoft's business model at the > > Stern School of Business at New York University, Craig Mundie, a senior > > vice president at Microsoft, suggested that companies embracing open > > source software are putting their intellectual property at risk. > > > > Here is Tim O'Reilly's response: > > > > "Microsoft SVP Craig Mundie is dead right when he says that the next > > generation of Internet applications can only come about through > > development efforts from a wide-ranging group of companies and > > developers.
