I'm going to chime in here with a guess, but this sounds like a file
protection issue; I've seen similar with sound and /dev/dsp. As root,
you might try a "chmod 666 /dev/????" on the scsi device driver for
the scanner (maybe /dev/sga) and see if that help. Beyond that, it
looks like Xsane has an environment variable that points to the device
to be used (SANE_DEFAULT_DEVICE); you might make sure that's set
correctly.
