Have three computers around here running Win98. Two have AMD K6-2 chips, one an Intel. They are about equally prone to crashing. There was a patch for Win95 and the faster K6 chips, and some motherboards for AMD with VIA chipsets used to have problems. Don't see reports of special problems these days with newer hardware.
Suggest your friend with the blue screen machine get it checked by someone familiar with hardware diagnostics and IRQ conflicts. I have had problems with defective CPU chips and bad memory chips when I got off brands. Wonder what sort of hardware you friend has?
