This will be interesting to read, when it comes out. I expect that M$ will publish a press release announcing it, and use it in a disinformation campaign to discredit open source. What is frightening to me is that M$ is willing to weaken our national security through bad software to ensure their profits. I'll hold off on further speculation about it until I read it.
Personally, I think the AdTI has questionable integrity concerning their research, based on past studies they have published. It doesn't take a genius to determine which way the AdTI is biased after examining their published studies. See: http://www.adti.net/gw-internet_regs.html http://www.smokefreeforhealth.org/studies/YachBialous.htm for a couple of specific examples. I really hope that this study causes a lot of discussion about the relative merits of the security of open-source software versus closed-source software. In my opinion, security through obscurity only gives the illusion of security. Closed source software makes it necessary to rely only on trust and faith in the software publisher, open source software means I can rely on my own judgement and of those I trust.
