I used openoffice with office xp at home and school respectively. I would use ftp to get my files from one place to another. I never had a format issue. From what I hear, the issue is if you have lots of fancy formatting. Edmund, I am fairly sure that openoffice is on my old workstation, if you want to test it out and whatnot.
