Well it's not much of a check but the quick way is to try installing the 
latest service patches - this runs a check and will refuse to install if 
the installation is bogus... <rant> leaving the machine vulnerable to 
the next piece of malware that wants to play spambot.  I wonder if the 
our fearless leaders would  be more interested in dealing with spam if 
Netsky and Bagle were emailing copies of GWBs tax returns to everyone.
