The QTParted in Simply Mepis worked  on a brand new Dell for me. ?I ended up 
deleting the "restore" partition later so I could have more primary 
partitions but the actual shrink worked. ?It might have given an error at the 
time it looked good after a reboot. ?NTFS sucks life, so YMMV.

If all you want is a backup of XP, try putting it on a newtwork device 
instead. ?I'm not sure how, but I know it can be done and it's 
better to have your backup on separate media.
