I would not think that "patching" the coating would yield suitable results.
Whatever you apply will likely not have the same characteristics. Also, if
there is any overlap, you will have dark spots, etc. Which is why I
suggested removing the old stuff before trying to use another coating.

If you do try patching with nail polish or something, I would suggest trying
to use a hobbyist air brush. It will yield much better results than any
brush.
