I don't know who is sponsoring the petition or who wrote it, but if we in the Linux community are going to choose to not support an effort like this because we don't approved of the way it was written, then we might just as well tell all of the Linux newbies to RTFM and learn to compile and install from source, because Linux will be at the same place 10 years from now that it is today.
