I see your point. However, you don't have to offer the service to the world. 
Again, open-source software is able to be kept patched and secure, so I 
wouldn't worry about that aspect at all.

One major benefit to running your own DNS is that your lookups are going to be 
much faster, thus improving the speed of all Internet applications. I do this 
here, and also for all my clients, if there is a server on-site.
