I think you're absolutely right. I also think that virtualization is helping move Linux onto more servers (virtual but still). It is becoming so easy to have a web server template or <whatever> server template in your choice for virtualization software. A few commands or clicks and you have a shiny new server pre-configured requiring only minor customization for the project/task. I am amazed at how well Linux (and Windows too, to a lesser extent) operates as VM's.
