Thanks for all of the suggestions everyone. I'm back up and running.
The problem was we were using a patched grub and it didn't update the
device map properly
whenever I installed the new kernel.
If anyone would like more details for educational and baldness
prevention reasons

want to try to compile the new kernel using config and be careful to
include the appropriate raid settings in the new kernel configuration.
Been a while since I've done any kernel configs - I'm on all Windblows
boxen right now.

Basic setup is this:
2 sets raid-6. 22 drives in each set plus a hot spare.
After I upgraded a kernel, the drives randomly reassign letters under
the raid and cause
the set to break on boot. I can use mdadm --assemble --scan -fv to
forcefully bring the
raid back online but it crashes soon thereafter.
