It's the front page in The Advocate today "IBM announcement stirs excitement in
downtown BR" although I wonder if the major benefit of the project will be to
encourage a few more Indian restaurants in town . this would be a good thing of
course but given the shambles that seems to be education here, I suspect they
will be importing most of the talent. I hope that I'm wrong.
I think that Jarred is spot on - outside of Louisiana there's is a reservoir of
talent that makes it easy to decide to live there because if one job folds it's
easy to find another one - Baton Rouge doesn't have that and as a result,
advertising locally for workers is fruitless which is why we have to go out of
state for all our development and production. This probably explains why,
according to one of the comments on the Advocate story, the IBM jobs are
costing 90k each in subsidies.

Yeah. This isn't some bogus company with a few developers, this is a HUGE deal
for Baton Rouge area technology.
It's like when McDonalds builds on an empty corner somewhere and everyone else
follows them and builds there too.
When IBM shows up in your town, others are sure to follow.

IMO. :-

IBM isn't cool per se, but new business (especially business with recognizable
names) in Baton Rouge is a good thing, especially when they agree to develop
property. The difference between Atlanta and Baton Rouge (at least as far as
this conversation is concerned) is: choice. I could leave the job I'm at
tomorrow and immediately go somewhere else in a place like Atlanta. I can't
return to Louisiana until I have options, so I think this is great news.

Also, I wonder just how many members of this list are no longer in BR?

Addendum: BR needs a hackerspace to be cool, just like www.denhac.org (warning:
self promotion)

P.S. :), :P, and probably >:O

Didn't I imply that above? I said that Brad leaving would make it even cooler.

Um, er, maybe it was *your* leaving that made it start getting cool.

I hate that Baton Rouge was apparently waiting until after I left to start
getting cool. Now if you could get rid of Brad Bendily I bet it would really
take off.
