Dear Dustin and other. Hello. This is Keith Thorne. I am the head of the Computing and Electronics Group at the LIGO Livingston Observatory. You may have heard of us back in February when we announce the first detection of gravitational waves (predicted by Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity).
My specific areas are the interferometer control and data acquisition computers and software. These are pretty much all Linux systems that have to run 24/7 to operate the laser interferometer. Some are running a real-time-patched version of Linux for very low latency (~ micro-seconds). We are running some Gentoo but mostly Ubuntu 12. We are now transitioning to Scientific Linux 7. We do a bit of shell scripting, as well as Python and Perl. The custom software we maintain is written in C or C++. We are also looking for an Linux System Administrator at the Assistant level to help with our data acquisition and large grid computer used for data analysis.
