That is exactly my point: serialization does not happen in that case
;-) This expression value is a sequence of XDM element nodes. If you
save these nodes to a property fragment, they are stored in some
binary format, like everything else in MarkLogic, but there is no XML
serialization (as opposed e.g. if you send these nodes to the wire, as
part of a HTTP response).
