I've found this post http://developer.marklogic.com/pipermail/general/2014-July/015342.html which basically seems to say that if a role is gone, it cannot be recovered. I've thus taken a slightly outdated backup of the Security database forest and it seems that this got me back running. I've also seen that it is not entirely unlikely that I deleted the role in the web UI when I really wanted to delete a user, but followed the link to the role instead of that to the user. My bad.
