I haven't tried your code, but can confirm that errors in an expression with $: 
has been crashing J for a while in windows.  IIRC, domain errors also cause a 
crash.  Sorry I cannot be more specific atm.

I tried it on Ubuntu and it gave a stack error as well. I only get the
crash on Windows 7.
