Most odd.

The problem does not go away when I shutdown and restart, or restart
disconnected from WiFi, or turn off utilities capable of monitoring
the keyboard. It is not a problem with j803 jconsole, nor with j602.

It seems the problem lies in my own Mac system, most likely to do with
my Qt installation (which I upgraded recently).
I note in passing that (127{a.) is the traditional DEL character.
