Actually, I think all of the products mentioned in the article
materialized. The COM support in the MS JVM was (and still is) really
cool. The IDE mentioned has several features that NetBeans still lacks
(like syntax checking as-you-type and a startup time shorter than
Ellison's droning speech at J1). Compared to VB or VC++, J++ was pretty
nice. It (and the MS JVM) are pretty antiquated these days, but the
products looked like they had a bright future before the Sun lawsuit
pushed them into the development of .NET.
