what you're configuring is "hardware" RAID5, correct?
since you said you configured it in the bios, as far
as linux is concerned it's just a drive to write on
and the adapter will take care of the striping.

AFAIK all modern distros are able to use a SATA drive,
so:
1- check the adapter bios configuration, did you 
prepare the drive for use (i know some adapters
initialize the drive before use)

2- double check the SATA compatibility with SUSE on
novell's site
