I agree it would be great to have a page to point at when asked about the differences between J and Matlab.
I have reread the discussions about J and Matlab I could find in my J archives. There are a few interesting remarks that have been made. I have never seen nor used Matlab and have no real interest in doing so. I do however want to know what to say when asked. My feeling at the moment after reading about it this morning is that Matlab is sort of a good front end to Lapack. People who are geared into using Fortran and such language find it a dream come true. Matlab puts some elementary APL like functionality on top of Fortran. Matlab is good at making simple Plots.
