in other words, if there were a C or Java callout to J, you could have just
passed that part over to J and got back the results. But the closed source
nature of J prevents that.

No:  I don't work with Java at my current job, but I can call out from C
or C# to J.

That was why I asked for a novice forum.

All J forums are novice forums.  People who maybe have lost their
novice qualifications participate, but that has yet to develop into a
serious problem.

Thanks, I'm going thru Ch. 9 in "Learning J" --- I just cant quit Learning J
because there's always another surprise around the bend!
