Terrence Brannon,
In both cases, what is under discussion is verb rank. The term r in the phrase
v"r is always a specified verb rank, not "the lesser of verb and noun rank".
In execution, there is what I think of as "effective rank", which is calculated
as you described. The rank of a parameter noun imposes a ceiling on the
effective rank in that context.
In J for C Programmers, chapter 6, the section entitled "A Mistake To Avoid" is
worth special attention.
