In case it is any help (which it probably won't seem to be!) I've installed 
J602 on Ubuntu 8.04 LTS 32-bit and it is working fine. I tested the font config 
changes above with no problems. My initial reaction is that Chris is probably 
right to suggest that it could be a problem with your Java version, or 
something to do with custom startup scripts.
