Given that I don't have the sources, it appears that the Java GUI front end actually "talks" to a precompiled native backend (libj.so and libjnative.so give this away).
More out of curiosity, and no I don't want to kill cats, is the actual J language implemented in C or C++ - I suspect it's not in Java Bytecode or Java but I could be wrong?
