mutilated misquotes
from Alma J Wetzker's 15 Jun 2005 classic prose
may follow:

" As for the WTC, I find the explanation of the high temp fire caused by
" burning jet fuel weakening steel beams so that a few floors collapsed at
" once and just overwhelming the lower floors on the way down, very
" credible.

It makes sense to me too. Plus, I'd expect an explosive demolition
(what other kind could there have been?) to have a unique, different
and probably obvious signature. And it's not as though people
weren't watching the collapse. But as I remarked, the guy who made
the allegation appeared to have claimed to have made a case - which
he was not questioned about nor asked to support. Why?

" When the politics become entangled in science, I have a hard time fully
" crediting the science.

Me, too. But I can't recall there ever having been such a situation
where the necessary remedies did not require expanding the powers of
the state. Certainly, I have no memory of there having been one ever
(with the possible exception of the 1776 events) whose remedy
required those powers be diminished.

" (For example: global warming and carbon dioxide
" reduction. Probably true, but still some troubling issues that make me
" think we are barking up the wrong tree.)

Bad science (politics involved:). Have you seen these?

I found using google to search for "McIntyre McKitrick global
warming" and variants with and without 'hockey stick' interesting.

But at least here, there is honest intellectual debate around the
science and the facts.

" I am studying to be an engineer.

Then you might also be sympathetic to the idea that measuring the
temperature of the earth proves nothing in regard to global warming.
What would be required in the first place to show the trend would be
a heat balance. Shouldn't be that hard to do with today's satellite
technology, should it? Especially when only one heat transfer
mechanism is applicable.

" I care about things like Apple
" switching to make an i-Ntel box. I care about linux. I care about
" getting my homework done for Monday. This stuff is entertainment until
" I can see evidence beyond someone's pet theory.

Yes, I agree but however :) the political crap will affect all of
this as well as whether and how you will be allowed to practice
Engineering - when the only ones who should have any say are you and
your customer(s). The very best of luck, btw, it can be a tough
profession - any particular discipline?

" I hope I have an open
" mind. The most distinguishing thing about science is the rapidity of
" induced humility. If you can't change your mind, your shelf life is
" measured in weeks.

I love it. There is at least one tag line there. Thanks.
