This country was founded on the principle of equality for all
(although it was much later that 'all' came to include women and
blacks and other racial groups). With broad brush strokes,
conservatives believe that equaliity means equali opportunity to
excel; liberals (an aside: that word has suffered almost a 180 degree
shift in meaning over the course of the 20th century) believe that
equality means equal outcomes for all, and no one must be allowed to
excel if all do not. Thus the popularity of Canadian or European style
government controlled medicine with the one group and its rejection by
the other.
I believe it was Plato that said, "There is no greater tyranny than to
force unequal things to be equal." Except he didn't say it in english,
and he probably wrote it.
