Last night we had an interesting presentation about Oracle in general
and Enterprise Linux == Unbreakable Linux in particular. Oracle
provides the venue for our Lug free of charge, so it's worthwhile
listening to their presentations from time to time.
1. Much noise (and it's only noise) has been made about Oracle
creating a fork. This could not be further from the truth. All they
have done is the same thing that CentOS, Whitebox Linux, and others
have done, namely repackage the GPL RHEL source rpms while replacing
the RH proprietary artwork, etc.
2. The term Unbreakable Linux (from Oracle's viewpoint) applies to the
service provided to back up the distro.
3. Oracle has been working on Linux and contributing GPL fixes (kernel
in particular) for a long time and will continue to do so.
4. Most of our needs as individual users get all we need from the ikes
of MySQL and PostgreSQL, but Oracle does have a lot of interesting
middleware offerings. Even their full blown database engine can be
used free of charge for development.
5. Oracle (per their internal direction) does not see RH as a
competative target; they are fully focused on competing with Windows.
This is not an Oracle sales pitch. I just thought it would make an
interesting off-topic discussion.
