As discussed on AKA Portal Light thread on this list, I would to start a discussion for how Jetspeed could provide a light solution. This solution I will call "Jetspeed Lite Edition", although its really just a different assembly of Jetspeed, scaled down for light-weight requirements. Of course it could exist in its own project repository, providing for a very simple portal solution.

In common with Jetspeed, it is built entirely with Jetspeed components to the Jetspeed API.

Requirements of J2LE:

0) Aggregation Engine Component
1) Support for managing Portlet Registry at runtime
2) Use Jetspeed's "local" invoker to package into single war
with ability to invoke portlets in a compliant manner
3) Support PSML industry standard
4) Support all Portals Bridges based technologies transparently
5) Significantly smaller footprint than Jetspeed Enterprise Edition
with packaging into a single war component
6) Support Jetspeed Component API industry standard
7) Spring Assembled
8) Light component implementations (remove DB from many)
9) Simplified Security
(remove Active Authentication, Login Module, Security Policy)
10) Simplified Build
11) Drop dead easy installer
12) Keep it simple philosophy, no heavy weight implementations
Leave that to the Enterprise Portal

Advantages of J2LE:

This approach will synergize the Portals community, not splinter it as it is based on a popular and well supported Jetspeed Components technology.

J2LE is built upon Jetspeed-2, leveraging 2 years of work and an existing community and well-known name at Apache.
