I had exactly the same problem trying to connect to Freenetname about
a year ago. Very frustrating! Their (freephone) help desk people
were very friendly, but not all that helpful! They can't get it into
their heads that there're more than Windoze or Mac OS in use these
days. One chap I spoke to even went into raptures recalling the great
time he'd had a few years ago with his Amiga, then told me point blank
it is impossible to use an Amiga for the Internet! When I told him
I'd not only been using it for Internet purposes for years but have
also written several websites with it, he just went quiet.

In the end they gave me a different dial-up number to try, and it
worked! There is no logical explanation. I still get the 'PAP
Authentication Failure' message on rare occasions regardless of which
ISP I am dialling.
It seems there is a quirk in the system somewhere, maybe if they can
give you an alternative number you might have more luck?
