Hello Eric,

   You can do this using the Table Browser tool on our website ('Tables' from 
the top blue navigation bar).  From the Table Browser, choose the assembly and 
table that you would like to query.

e.g.

group: Genes & Gene Prediction Tracks
track: UCSC Genes
table: knownGene
region: chr1 (all of chromosome 1)

   Then click the "summary/statistics" button to see all sorts of stats about 
the genes on that chrom, such as:

item count      6,633
item bases      114,653,420 (50.96%)
item total      323,778,789 (143.90%)
smallest item   22
average item    48,813
biggest item    1,548,868
