Hello Felicity,

Changing the background display color is not a user defined option when using 
the main UCSC Genome Browser. Were you to run your own local mirror, this would 
be possible by going into the main code base and altering the default color 
coding there. 

Saving a screen shot as a image or the browser display as a PDF file, then 
altering the colors using an editing/illustration program is an option, but may 
take some work to tune.
