Hello, Michael.

Yes, we receive daily updates from Genbank. If you have a specific gene in
mind, the easiest way to find when a gene was last updated would be to check
NCBI directly. For example, if you search for SOD1 in the Browser and then
click on the SOD1 gene, clicking the subsequent RefSeq link
(http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nuccore/NM_000454?report=GenBank) shows that
this record was last updated on 03-June-2012.

For checking a large number of genes, you can use our Table Browser to see
the last modified date. If you are unfamiliar with our Table Browser,
please see the User's Guide at
http://genome.ucsc.edu/goldenPath/help/hgTablesHelp.html.

While using the Table Browser will give you a general idea of the date when
a record was last updated, our Table Browser does not always match Genbank
precisely. For instance, while Genbank reports that SOD1 was last updated
on 03-June-2012, the Table Browser reports the date as 22-March-2012. The
only way to be certain of 100% accuracy would be to check Genbank directly.
To use the Table Browser to check update times, perform the following steps:

1. From http://genome.ucsc.edu, select "Tables" from the blue navigation
bar at the top of the screen.

2. Select the following options:
Clade: Mammal
Genome: Human
Assembly: Feb. 2009 (GRCh37/hg19)
Group: Genes and Gene Prediction Tracks
Track: RefSeq Genes
Table: refGene
Region: Select "genome" for the entire genome or select "position" to only
specify a certain position. You can also specify multiple positions by
clicking the "define regions" button. You can also specify only certain
genes by clicking the "paste list" or "upload list" buttons on the
"identifiers" line.
Output format: selected fields from primary and related tables

3. Click the "get output" button

4. In the "Linked Tables" section, check the hg19.gbStatus checkbox

5. Scroll down and click the "allow selection from checked tables" button

6. In the "Select Fields from hg19.refGene" section, check the checkboxes of
the fields you want in your output

7. In the "hg19.gbStatus fields" section, check the "modDate" checkbox

8. Click the "get output" button

Subject: [Genome] RefSeq Gene track question

Good morning,

I have a question regarding the RefSeq Genes track. In the description of
this track it states that the data underlying the track are updated daily.
I'm assuming this means that genes can be added to this track on any given
day. Is there a way to find out when a gene was added? Thank you for your
time.
