Hello, It sounds like you may be querying an assembly that does not have the UCSC genes (aka known gene) gene prediction track. The method outlined in that mailing list question should also work for whatever gene prediction tracks are available on your assembly of interest (i.e. RefSeq, Ensembl, etc). To determine which gene prediction track is best for your purposes you can consult the description pages for each to read how they were generated. To see the description for any track you can click on the gray bar to the left of the track in the main display or click on the track title above its configuration pulldown menu.
Note that if you *are* on an assembly that has the known genes data set and trying to find the UCSC genes table, the track title is "UCSC genes" but the underlying table you want is called knownGene. This name mismatch has been known to cause confusion for users in the past.
