So what can I do to help resolve this problem? Is this something that
needs to be changed in the configure options for gcc? or would this
reside in some of the patches for prefixed gcc?

On OSX there is no other compiler but gcc. In Prefix cc is an
alias to
gcc, so it should go right in any case/os.
