Don't know if this has anything to do with it but:

With the latest gentoo-sources and nvidia-kernel, I had to enable
AGPGART in the kernel config (before I was using NvAGP instead of
AGPGART and AGPGART was disabled in the kernel). After doing this
everything worked as before. (You can diagnose this problem when
modprobing the nvidia module).
