This is a follow up in a new thread, more readable. BTW I think *my*
thread got hijacked :-)

Yesterday evening I found an error on my part, somehow I
linked /etc/make.profile
to /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/amd64/2004.3/lib64 instead
of /usr/portage/profiles/default-linux/amd64/2004.3/ and changed back
and forth without a complete "system" rebuild.
So I decided to take back to a stable 2004.3 before attempting upgrade.
Basically I made more or less step 1 to 3 Tres suggests (I read your
emails only this morning.); but in the end glibc was locked, no more no
less as gcc was before.

I then reinstalled "system" from pre-multilib-attempt packages.

Something else went wrong, and now my system is badly hosed, half of the
applications are dead: man term emerge...

I just burned a 2005.0 fresh iso, and will reboot shortly to rescue my
poor Linux.

Thanks for all your helpful messages, hoping 2005.1 will be flawlessly.
