I ran fix_libtool_files.sh against versions 3.4.3.20050110-r1 to
3.4.3-r1 in reverse order. It only did any work in the case of 3.4.3-r1.
I still got the same result as before when I ran emerge -uaDv world:

I'm considering wiping the Xfce system and reinstalling it to see if
that H-bomb approach will work - the partition's already grown to twice
the size of the Gnome partition, so I need to do a bit of pruning at least.
