I knew this was going to be something simple & stupid. I finally went into firefox help itself (instead of googling around to no avail) & it says to make sure java is enabled in preferences. So I went to preferences & its TURNED OFF! Turned it on, now about:plugins shows the jre. Yay! So setting up symlinks, selecting vm's, all that stuff has no effect if java is turned off in the browser itself!
