I have net-misc/networkmanager-0.8-r1 installed with gnome desktop and
networkmanager in USE flags.

USE="geoip startup-notification curl lame oss sdl wavpack esd cdda spell
gcj sqlite sqlite3 gnutls zeroconf syslog mad mp3 gif ogg samba
subversion ffmpeg libnotify gimp v4l2 v4l gphoto2 png tiff scanner
vorbis win32codecs gnome-keyring mono 3dnow gstreamer wifi jpeg alsa mmx
sse sse2 X gnome java nsplugin xinetd truetype unicode usb dbus cups
acpi lm_sensors clamav gtk policykit svg opengl snmp cgi djvu
networkmanager"

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~amd64"
profile is default/linux/amd64/10.0/no-multilib

Also networkmanager has been emerged with USE="connection-sharing dhcpcd
gnutls nss resolvconf -avahi -bluetooth -dhclient -doc"

The question is, why there is no applet appearing on the panel when I
start networkmanager (/etc/init.d/NetworkManager start)?

ps says it runs:
root      2298     1  0 17:59 ?        00:00:00 /usr/sbin/NetworkManager
--pid-file /var/run/NetworkManager.pid
